Owner Spotlight: Matt Fudge
Hi, my name is Matt Fudge, proud owner of Excede Construction. Today, I’m excited to share with you a little bit about myself and the work that I do.
The most enjoyable part of my job by far is watching spaces transform. My customers are so happy when a kitchen works and looks better. I love to see and share the before and after photos of the work we have completed.
I have been in the construction business for 16 years. Excede Construction has been in operation for four and half years. I’m involved with basement refinishing, kitchen, bath and home remodeling. In addition to Excede Construction, I have a custom woodworking business. The main reason I chose these businesses is to use my skill and help people transform blank canvases into beautiful finished products.
As the business owner, I have a lot of responsibilities. I meet with potential clients, and design layouts, budgets and proposals. I schedule and manage contractors and materials for projects. I also make daily site visits to oversee all projects and meet with inspectors at our project sites.
My typical day starts at 4:45 with a trip to the gym. I’m invigorated after a good workout. Then I start checking in on each project to make sure everything is on track. This includes knowing that all materials have been ordered, are on their way, or being installed. My work day finishes up in my office completing paperwork, invoices and bills. I attach special importance to future project bids. Depending on the amount of paperwork, I spend an average of between eight and 12 hours working each day.
The most important part of my job is to ensure that we follow the agreed work schedule. I get this right even before I set things in motion. I have it when my team and my team and I first step foot on the project site. We always have it top of mind as work progresses until final completion and inspection.
The top three skills I use to perform my job well are communication, quality assurance, and efficiency.
By listening, watching and doing, every day, I am able to become a better business person. I also strongly believe in having a positive attitude and remaining humble. I offer my best to my clients and in my personal life. I am thankful to all the people who I have worked with and befriended through Excede Construction over the years. I take delight in these interactions and believe it is they who have contributed to my business success.
The most satisfying moments in my business life have been the completion of large projects. They have taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to.
In my personal life, my most satisfying moments are with my kids. I love going places and doing things with them. They are so much fun to be with and truly light up my life.
I also care deeply about my friends and their success. My good friend Jesse at Lindemann’s Woodworks and I have worked on several projects together. Over the years, we have been able to have a lot of fun working on exciting and different ventures. I have enjoyed collaborating with him and watching his business grow.
Outside of my work time, I stay healthy with crossfit. I also enjoy outdoor activities and love to mountain bike off-road and camp with my wife and our two kids.
My religion is important to me. I actively participate with my church. I donate regularly and believe religion has brought my family closer and made us a stronger unit.
When it comes to my personal values, ethics and communication top my list. I am constantly amazed at how important they are to my business and all business interactions. They help carry a business so much further than simply being the “cheapest” option for customers. I work on these values every single day to become the best person and contractor I can be.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
